Since its opening, Jacinto City Elementary has
grown in size, adding the Red Jones Learning
Center in 1988 and a PPCD and Kindergarten wing
in 2000 to accommodate early childhood growth.
The school currently houses 35 classrooms, a
computer/science lab, art room and music rooms.
“As we say goodbye to the building we’ve known
and loved, it’s exciting to think about what awaits
the students, faculty, staff and community of
Jacinto City,” Ms. Becky Gardea, principal of
Jacinto City Elementary remarked. “It will be
difficult to say goodbye to the old Jacinto City
Elementary, but we will begin a new road to new
memories and celebrate what awaits us.”
Galena Park ISD will be closing the doors of the current Jacinto City Elementary and will begin
construction on the new school building during the 2019-2020 school year. The Board of Trustees recently
named VLK Architects as the designer and Rice and Gardner Consultants as the project manager for the
rebuild of the school.
Jacinto City Elementary held their groundbreaking
ceremony on Wednesday, May 29 , surrounded by
th
community members, elected officials, and former
and current staff members.
“Often, to get something new requires getting
rid of something old,” Jueretta Berry, Jacinto City
Elementary music teacher said. “With that being
said, I am excited and highly anticipating the
completion of the new building! I will forever hold
near and dear the fun times and memories of the
original school where I began my career.”
When the new building opens, walking trails will be located
on the left side of the building and the original mural will be
installed in a prominent location. The mural was originally
featured on the outside of the school until it was enclosed
in 1988.
This project is part of the Bond 2016, which Galena Park ISD
community members approved on May 7,2016. This $290
million package includes the rebuilding of six elementary
campuses, the new construction of a North Shore 10
th
Grade Center, renovations/upgrades to other campuses
and facilities, and acquiring land for future facilities.
