We Are So… Extra!
By: Dr. Tommie L. Smith
Former NFL Coach Jimmy Johnson famously said,
“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary
is that little extra,” and Galena Park ISD (GPISD)
is known for “that little extra” in academics and
extracurricular arenas. Extracurricular activities are
an essential part of a student’s education, providing
opportunities to explore interests and develop
important life skills. However, it’s the teachers
who lead these activities that often go unnoticed
for their tremendous efforts. Band directors and
athletic coaches–in particular–go the extra mile to
Athletic Football Coordinator/Head Coach supplement the curriculum and provide students with

GPISD Band directors not only teach students how to play music but
also instill discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills. Galena Park High
School Band Director KC Christensen and North Shore Senior High
School Band Director Shane Goforth spend countless hours outside
of school to ensure students have the necessary resources and
opportunities to succeed. A primary benefit of the band is that it helps
improve students’ cognitive abilities. Playing an instrument requires
a great deal of focus, concentration, and problem-solving skills,
all of which transfer to other areas of academics. Being in the
band also provides students with a sense of community and
belonging. Director Christensen fosters a sense of community
by reinforcing the band motto of “Siempre, which means
‘always’ in Spanish. As early as sixth grade, we establish
a vertical structure based on a rubric goal of ‘always’
performing at our best; we ‘always’ think in the direction
of where we want to be; and once a Band of Gold
member, ‘always’ a Band of Gold member.”
From basic music lessons to countless hours of
practice and preparation for competitions,
these directors go above and beyond their job
descriptions to support their students. Director
Goforth feels “fortunate to work with students
for four years. We want them to ‘Do great
work.’ And while I want students to give their
best, I try very hard to do the same.” Being
a part of the band also fosters a sense of
pride and accomplishment as students
work toward mastering a difficult skill
and performing in front of others.
Goforth goes on to say, “Overall, Band Director KC Christensen - GPHS
