07 PARTICIPATION IN WORKSHOPS AND OTHER PERFORMANCE
IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMS
levels of leaders participate in team-building activities to further
strengthen the working relationships between district-level and
campus-level administration Campus principals meet weekly with
their Professional Learning Community (PLC) to reflect and share
ideas with their peer group, and curriculum-focused associate
principals meet bimonthly to ensure a cohesive understanding of
instructional programming in the district When new leaders are
hired, they are provided with resources and support to ensure
success in their new role Mentors are assigned to each individual,
and support sessions are conducted with these new administrators
to foster leadership development
Board trustees have long supported Galena Park ISD’s “Grow Your Own” initiatives which
build capacity within the organization Through the Board’s guidance, a robust professional
development program for aspiring leaders is in place for several critical areas:
• Aspiring Administrators Academy (AAA)
• Aspiring Counselors (ACA)
• Aspiring Campus Coach/Specialist Academy
• Aspiring Diagnosticians Academy
• Homegrown Academy for Aspiring Teachers
Currently, 56 percent of the GPISD’s 86 campus administrators have been trained and
promoted through the AAA, and 38 percent of the district’s 50 counselors participated in
the ACA prior to their assignment to a counseling position The more recently implemented
programs for coaches/specialists and diagnosticians are quickly becoming a critical path to
those particular leadership roles within the district
