By hiring early, school districts can ensure they have qualified and effective teachers in
place at the start of the school year, leading to a more positive and successful educational
experience for students.
Early Resignation Incentives
To support campus staffing needs in a time of critical teacher shortages, the Board has
approved an early resignation incentive for the past 3 years� Staff members are given the
opportunity to submit a resignation notice within a designated time frame to earn the
incentive� This early notice has allowed campus and district leaders the opportunity to
proactively identify vacancies early in the spring semester and begin targeted recruiting
efforts sooner� In doing so, Galena Park ISD has increased the chances of hiring stronger
candidates before the start of the peak hiring season when all school districts are competing
for high-quality teachers�
Make It Take It Center
A recent strategic planning survey showed many teachers indicating they spend large
amounts of money out-of-pocket to decorate their classrooms or prepare materials for
instruction� Galena Park ISD leaders, along with the Board, decided to address this need
by creating a Make It Take It Center� This well-utilized center is open to teachers during
the summer months, so they can prepare for the upcoming school year� Special days and
hours are set aside for new teachers and groups who want to have team training� Supplies
include color copiers, black and white copiers, colored paper, card stock, laminators, poster
machines, folders, sentence strips, dye cuts, markers, binders, and much more� Attendance
is always optional, but it is extremely popular� Even teachers who do not come to the Make It
Take It Center appreciate the shorter lines at the copiers when school starts back�
