07 PARTICIPATION IN WORKSHOPS AND OTHER PERFORMANCE

HAVE ATTENDED IN RECENT YEARS, INCLUDING EVIDENCE OF COMPLETION OF REQUIRED
BOARD MEMBER TRAINING

Through workshops, conventions, and training, GPISD trustees have not only built a strong
foundation for this Team of Eight, but they have also built strong friendships� This group is a
true testament to the old proverb, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another!”
They not only grow through professional development training, but through the leadership of
each other as well�

GPISD trustees meet each year for their Annual Team of Eight Workshop with certified trainer
and former school district superintendent, Dr� Robert McGowen� Over the past few years,
they have built a rapport with Dr� McGowen and look forward to continuing team building
under his guidance� Additionally, they attend various conventions throughout the year� Over
the past two years, the Team of Eight members have attended the following conferences,
workshops, and training sessions:
• National School Board Association Conference

• TASA/TASB Convention
• TASB Summer Leadership Institute
• Mexican American School Board Association Conference
• Gulf Coast School Board Association Meetings & Workshops
• Region 4 Grassroots Meetings

Board trustees further support the superintendent and staff by obtaining mandatory
continuing education credit hours each year, which keeps them abreast of the latest
policies, trends and educational mandates� This obligation is fulfilled by attendance at
conferences such as the TASA/TASB Convention, TASB Summer Leadership Institute, National
School Board Association Conference and
Gulf Coast Area Association of School Boards
Meeting and Workshops� Board trustees also
complete online courses offered through the
TASB Online Learning Center, covering subjects
such as board governance and politics,
Special Education law, the Texas property tax
system, budget and finance, and working with
school attorneys�

The Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees has met
all required Continuing Education Courses
(CEC) set by the state� During the April 2025
Board meeting, President Norma Hernandez
reported on trustees’ continuing education
credits�
