When we started asking for stakeholder opinions of district culture, practices, and programs this past fall, I
expected to hear about some of our homeruns/strengths, and boy did we! Our stakeholders definitely gave us,
what I believed to be, well-deserved kudos. Across all stakeholder groups, these were the highest-rated items for
district culture and district programs/practices:
District Culture:
• Efficient and effective use of technology, computers, and other information systems
• Feeling safe while on Galena Park ISD property
• Clean and properly maintained GPISD facilities
• Pleasant and helpful encounters with district and campus staff
District Programs/Practices:
• Investment in Technology
• Career & Technical Education Programs / Dual Credit Program
• Athletic Programs
Then, there were the “strikeouts.” Expected? Yes, but definitely harder to receive. Our stakeholders were truly
open and honest with their feedback. Without surveys and stakeholder input, district and campus leadership can
only assume they know where the pain points are and where the improvement is needed. We think we know, but
do we? Stakeholder input makes our weaknesses impossible to ignore. Across all stakeholder groups, these were
the lowest-rated items for district culture and district programs/practices:
District Culture:
• Climate in which people can freely express unpopular views without fear of personal attack
• Supports “out of the box” thinking, rather than repeating what has always been done
District Programs/Practices:
• Employee Retention/Compensation
• Mental and Health Initiatives for Students and Staff
There were quite a few “write-in” comments regarding areas that stakeholders believe need to be addressed.
The most common areas mentioned by parents and community respondents were campus drop-off/pick-up
lines, and COVID-19 safety procedures and protocols. Employees cited consistent student accountability and
educational standards as areas of concern.
While the highest and lowest-rated areas are the ones that stand
out, overall, our stakeholder input indicates we ARE doing a lot
of great things in a lot of different areas. Part of our focus will be
continuing to build capacity in these already high-performing
areas, as vigorously as we address the areas where growth is
needed.
In the coming months, we hope to share more about our
strategic plan as it evolves and takes shape. The information
we’ve collected to this point has given us useful insight and
will only help us become better for our students, staff, and
community.
Thank you for making GPISD a GREAT place to be.
Sincerely,
Terri Moore
