A New Chapter in Inclusive Education
An extension of Galena Park ISD’s commitment to a
legacy of excellence is the new Adaptive Playground
located at Dr. Shirley J. Williamson Elementary School.
Dedicated on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, this innovative
play area fosters an inclusive environment where all
students can thrive, regardless of their physical or
cognitive ability.
The playground buzzes with activity as students joyfully
explore soft surfaces, open spaces, accessible areas,

and sensory-rich stations. Specially designed structures
throughout the playground promote cooperative play, encourage students to work together,
and build critical social skills.
While it is purposefully designed to cater to the needs of
diverse learners, the playground supports the physical,
emotional, and social development of all children.
Additionally, GPISD’s Adaptive Playground aligns with
our legacy of academic excellence as it removes
barriers and increases student opportunities.
The implementation of this playground showcases
the District’s willingness to adopt innovative practices
that enhance student learning. This playground is not
only supportive of physical play but also encourages
cognitive engagement and creativity and will serve as
a benchmark for others to follow. Student Enjoys New Playground
Dr. John Moore (Superintendent of Schools), Norma Hernandez, Jose Jimenez, and Linda Clark Sherrard,
