STUDENTS EXPLORE SPACE
on Community Day
n October 16, Galena Park I.S.D. (GPISD) elementary and middle school students had the
opportunity to visit with high-profile astronauts and cosmonauts from around the world as part of
OCommunity Day with the Association of Space Explorers’ (ASE) XXXII Planetary Congress.
Community Day is a five-day public program hosted by the ASE every year. This event celebrates the past,
present and future of space exploration from all over the world including the USA, Russia, Asia, Europe. This
year, Community Day took place in Texas, where 125 astronauts traveled all over the state to speak to K-12
students, universities, community groups and companies about their missions in space and what’s in store
for the future of space exploration.
Jean Loup Chretien, Mike Foreman, Bruce Melnick, Gerhard Thiele,
Farkas Bertalan, and Tim Kopra visited 10 elementary campuses and two
middle school campuses to share their experiences in space and also
hosted a Q&A session with students. The students asked many questions
and were amazed to find out it takes under 9 minutes to get to the
International Space Station!
“We have an opportunity to educate students about the things we
have seen in space,” Mike Foreman, former astronaut said.
We would like to thank all of the astronauts and cosmonauts
who visited Galena Park I.S.D., thank you for letting us be a part of
Community Day.
