01 FUNCTIONS AS A POLICY-MAKING BODY

The superintendent and board secretary maintain close and transparent relationships with
the Board by consistently informing them of current issues, such as state mandates, which
empower them as a policy-making body� In addition to daily phone calls, emails, and
text messages, information necessary to make well-informed decisions for the District is
transmitted to the Board through weekly Board Notes and BoardBook� Board members are
also trained for Team of Eight group texts to ensure a full understanding that texts can meet
requirements of a walking quorum� In addition, member questions can be submitted to the
board secretary who will then contact appropriate cabinet members and notify Dr� Moore�
Responses are then sent to the entire board and superintendent�

In GPISD, the Board believes one of the critical functions of the school board is informed
decision-making� Board members have access to a Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
dashboard which is updated monthly� This dashboard allows them to review data, listen
to expert opinions, and consider feedback before making choices which impact the
District� This careful approach ensures decisions are based on facts and tailored to improve
educational outcomes�

Being well-informed, trustees are very supportive of establishing local school district policies�
The Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees has consistently approved all recommended policy
changes�
