01 FUNCTIONS AS A POLICY-MAKING BODY

1.4- INPUT FROM PROFESSIONAL STAFF AND/OR
PATRONS INTO THE POLICY MAKING PROCESS

The Board recognizes community support for the
        District’s schools is a vital part of their success;
therefore, trustees work hard to maintain an open-
door policy for community input At monthly board
meetings, parents, students, staff and community
members may address the Board during the Public
Comment section of the board agenda Frequently,
board workshops are held to introduce proposed
policies and provide adequate time for discussion
prior to consideration of policy adoption at future monthly meetings

Throughout the year, district administrators offer feedback to the Board on proposed local
policies from parents, students, teachers, and community members Also discussed with
these stakeholders are topics such as the academic calendar, the State of the District report,
standardized testing, district growth, district goals, and student dress code, to name a few
Input is regularly sought from various committees, such as the District Planning and Advisory
Committee (DPAC), the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board, the Teacher Leadership
Council, and the Teacher Leadership Team

Utilizing the DPAC, school board members are directly connected to various
stakeholders within the district, including teachers, students, community members, and
the superintendent Effective communication is crucial during this process The board
encourages open dialogue among all stakeholders, including students, parents, and
teachers This ensures everyone is aware of district goals and challenges Regular meetings
and surveys help gather feedback, which is essential for making informed decisions
Each spring, the DPAC committee helps set the annual goals for the district by sharing
insights related to a wide range of district programs The District Improvement Plan (DIP) is
established based on these annual goals

Additionally, the relationship between the Board and Dr Moore is crucial for the District’s
success By working closely with the superintendent and his cabinet, trustees gain insights
into the operational needs of the schools, allowing them to allocate resources effectively
This partnership is built on trust and mutual respect, enabling both parties to function as a
supportive team They can address challenges and implement initiatives which enhance
        student learning by working together

In GPISD, school board members view their role as essential to the growth and success of
their district They strive to create a supportive educational environment for all students
through collaboration, effective communication and informed decision-
making Their partnerships with Dr Moore and district leaders exemplify how BUILDING ON A
teamwork can positively change the school community
                                                                                                 LEGACY
