At a time when many teachers are leaving the profession, Belen Romero, GPISD
Secondary Rookie Teacher of the Year, “ran toward it and didn’t look back.”
Romero began her teaching career in the midst of global uncertainty–in 2020,
at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She began substitute teaching and
found her calling. After working in the oil and gas industry for 15 years, Romero
was “pleasantly surprised to find such passionate hearts that do it for the kids.”
While the first year was challenging, blended learning that included her 6

instruction, and the integration of technology became somewhat second
nature. She is thankful to be a part of the teaching profession and is “here to serve with all my
heart, hopefully for many years to come.”

Rachel Tapner, GPISD Elementary Teacher of the Year, has a passion for working
with and advocating for families of children with special needs. The majority of
Tapner’s students need educational and social support, and she works to fill their
needs. When working with families just beginning their special education journey,
“I have made it my mission to help provide parents with the connections and
tools that will be vital to their child’s future success.” Her students’ families receive
a comprehensive list of local community resources, including native-language
links when available. She also has quarterly meetings to discuss student goals
and challenges and then works with families to create a plan that addresses
their unique needs. When asked about her WHY, Tapner answered, “I’ve always felt incredibly
honored to be entrusted with the education of someone’s child, and because I impact the
hearts of students and parents, I strive to make all hopes a reality.”

We are thankful for these outstanding teachers sharing their perspectives and preparing GPISD
students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners.
