The Return of the Olympiad
fter a two-year hiatus, the Fifth Grade Olympiad
has finally returned! On Friday, April 29, fifth
Agrade students from each of the 15 elementary
campuses gathered at the GPISD Athletic Stadium and
Complex to compete for the coveted titles in numerous
field events, including hula hoop, jump rope, softball
throwing, relays and many other events.
One of the most prestigious contests to win each year
is the tug-of-war competition. Once again, tug-of-war
proved to be a grueling battle, as students tugged Tom McCollough
with all their might, pulling one another back and forth Outstanding Achievement Recipients
until the victors reigned. This year’s tug-of-war winners were the Cimarron Elementary Girls’
Stars Team, Jacinto City Boys’ Stars Team, Williamson Elementary Girls’ Stripes Team, and Tice
Elementary Boys’ Stripes Team!
The Fifth Grade Olympiad culminated with the presentation of the Tom McCollough
award, given to students exemplifying outstanding achievement in physical
education. This award is named in honor of the first Galena Park ISD athletic
director. Congratulations to Yasmin Villatoro Muñoz from Cloverleaf
Elementary, Josiah Zavala from Woodland Acres Elementary,
Destiny Albarran from Cimarron Elementary and Victor
Alvarez from Sam Houston Elementary for receiving
the award.
