Scholastic Winners from GPHS
alena Park High School’s newest
National Medalists in the 2023 Scholastic
GArt & Writing Awards are Victoria
Valdez Tovar (senior) and Madelyn Trevino
(junior). These amazingly talented students
created pieces among less than 2,000 works
that received a National Medal, and their
submissions were in the top 1% of more than
260,000 entries!
Victoria Valdez Tovar’s portfolio, Introspection,
was rated ‘exceptional’ by the Alliance for
Young Artists and Writers. It included a small
piece of fiction, a poetic personal memoir,

and even a societal critique. However, it was
primarily a work of self-reflection and personal examination, thus the title Introspection. Victoria
credited “Introspection to powerful moments in my life. This exposure and vulnerability were
vital to my learning process–to get to where you want to go, you must examine where you’ve
been.”
Madelyn Trevino impressed the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers with her original painting,
What They See. Madelyn worked to create a visual representation of how female experiences
are different from others–especially women of color. The red and blue lighting are semblances
of the United States and Texas state flags. Created during the time when the historic
overturning of Roe v. Wade took place, Madeline’s original piece will also make history.
Madelyn’s talent will now take her to Carnegie Hall on June 8, 2023, where she will accept a
national medal!
Victoria and Madelyn are now part of a legacy that has been celebrating artists including
Stephen King and Andy Warhol–who won scholastic awards when they were teens.
