SuperStar Buddy Relays
y 8 a.m. on March 9 , nearly 450 special needs student-
th
athletes, 500 student-buddies, countless parents, and 300
Bteachers and volunteers had already filled the Galena Park
ISD Stadium to witness and participate in a day full of friendly
competition—the first-ever Super Star Buddy Relays, hosted by
the offices of Student Support Services and Special Programs. This
athletic meet for Galena Park ISD’s students with special-needs,
included athletes paired with a non-disabled, high school “buddy”
who assisted in adapted physical challenges. While being kissed by the sun that only Spring
can bring, the athletic pairs laced up for relays, readied themselves for prize-winning putting,
and warmed up for ball-passing contests all while supporting one another.
Dr. Mechelle Epps, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, ended the day
with “This was a long time coming and a true labor of love. When Special Programs and I first
envisioned this day, we were not ready for the pride and joy that filled our hearts. We thank
the students, teachers, parents, volunteers, event sponsors and the Galena Park ISD Board
of Trustees for their participation and support of this unique event that showcased good
sportsmanship, teamwork, and inclusionary programs for GPISD students!”
