School Lunch Heroes Pack A Punch
he Student Nutrition Department at
Galena Park ISD began the 2022-2023
Tschool year with nutrition ambition! The
goal was to introduce students to new, fresh,
and delicious meals. School administrators
and the Student Nutrition Department worked
together to create events and opportunities
for GPISD students to be more involved with
the implementation of healthy meals. New
collaborations included Rainbow Markets
where students were excited about the
opportunity to try fresh fruits and vegetables,
hydroponic lettuce presentations that informed
students about the cultivating process of local

and organic lettuce used in every Friday’s
Garden Salads, a food expo that was part of an annual food show that encouraged students
to voice their interest in certain food items being brought to their cafeteria as menu options,
and several tasting events where students provided timely feedback to the Student Nutrition
Department.
GPISD’s School Nutrition Department also achieved remarkable success during
the 2022-2023 school year. They were among 26 nationwide Summer Meal
sponsors to receive a Turnip the Beet award. This award program recognized
the high-quality meals provided during the summer months. They also
received the “Best of The Bunch” recognition for completing the Farm
Fresh Challenge hosted by the Texas Department of Agriculture. This
recognition also championed GPISD for serving more than three Texas-
produced food items per week and providing nutrition education
at least once a week during the challenge. Our School Lunch
