Promoting Ownership In Food Choices

On October 18 , Galena Park ISD’s Student Nutrition
                       th
Department hosted a group of students from Woodland
Acres Elementary School, North Shore Elementary School,
Williamson Elementary School, and Cunningham Middle
School to attend the Co-op Food Expo. Students sampled
a variety of dishes and provided feedback to both the
manufacturer and the menu planner to help shape
future school menus. The event aimed to enhance meal
satisfaction and participation while educating students on
the importance of healthy eating habits. Student Evaluating Tasty Treats

This initiative highlights GPISD’s Student Nutrition Department’s commitment to including student
choice in meal preparation. Student input and feedback are also encouraged on every
campus. Students have unique needs and preferences when it comes to food, and soliciting
student input is a way to ensure that menu options provided by the Student Nutrition Department
are appealing, nutritious, and satisfying to students. By involving students in the decision-making
process, valuable insight is gained into what types of foods students enjoy and what types of
foods they would like to see on the menu. Such information can be used to create menus that
are more in line with the tastes and preferences of the student body, resulting in a more positive
and enjoyable dining experience for everyone. Additionally, by seeking input from students,
GPISD can once again promote a sense of ownership and engagement among students, which
leads to a more positive school environment.
