06 PROVISION OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE SCHOOL SYSTEM

Strategic and Effective Use of ESSER Funding
Galena Park ISD, under the leadership of its Board of Trustees, strategically utilized its $80
million ESSER II and ESSER III allocation to ensure continuity of services, accelerate student
learning, support staff and student well-being, and maintain safe school operations in
response to the COVID-19 pandemic�

Academic Recovery and Learning Acceleration
To address learning loss and support academic growth, the District dedicated over $12
million to:

• Hire additional staff for accelerated instruction, reduced class sizes, and team
teaching�

• Implement high-dosage tutoring (small groups or 1:1 support)�
• Expand learning time through before/after-school programs and extended summer
learning�

Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Support
Recognizing the pandemic’s impact on student and staff well-being, Galena Park ISD:

• Added counselors and evidence-based SEL resources
• Increased access to high-quality instructional tools and technology

• Provided targeted support for vulnerable populations including homeless students and
English learners
• Offered professional development to strengthen classroom and emotional support
strategies

Health and Safety Protocols
To safely reopen and operate schools, the District implemented:

• Enhanced cleaning procedures and provided COVID-19 testing and vaccines
• Hired additional nurses and upgraded campus clinic facilities
• Invested in HVAC and air quality improvements across school facilities
