06 PROVISION OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE SCHOOL SYSTEM
Safety and Security Enhancements
The Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees believes in safe and secure learning environments
for students and staff By consistently advocating for and supporting safety and security
enhancements each year, trustees are ultimately ensuring a peace of mind and trust
for students, staff, and the community, fostering a more positive and secure learning
environment
Galena Park ISD spent approximately $7 million during the 2024-2025 school year making
campuses and district facilities safer and more secure Highlights of the enhancements
include:
• GPISD has added security fencing at nine campuses
• Fencing includes egress gates to allow quick and safe exit from outside areas
• RFID card access is deployed where gates receive regular usage to ensure gates are
never left unlocked
• Drive gates are used to secure the camp us once school has started
» These gates require an RFID card for access
» These gates also utilize AI video phones to visually verify and then allow access
GPISD is using perforated graphics at vestibule entrances and elementary cafeterias which
have a direct line of sight into them
• The graphics present a welcoming theme or campus logo which prevents direct sight
into the building while allowing staff to easily view the person on the other side of the
glass
GPISD deploys over 2,600 security cameras across all facilities
• The District continuously adds and upgrades cameras throughout the system
GPISD uses its existing camera system to interface with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) server
that detects brandished firearms
• The District currently has contracted for 200 cameras, covering all campuses, to be AI
monitored
• When the AI detects a weapon, it is reviewed by a human at a third-party Operations
Center
» Verified alerts are immediately transmitted to school deputies, district personnel,
and 911Alerts include a photograph of what AI detected, a map showing where
the camera is located, and latitude and longitude coordinates
GPISD uses a VirTra Law Enforcement Simulator which helps prepare law enforcement officers
for real-life incidents, so they, and the communities they serve, can remain safe Each real-
world judgmental use of force training simulator has immersive and intense scenarios that
provide an in-depth look into human performance
