4.4-EVIDENCE OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest,
optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which
extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education� In
GPISD the Board of Trustees supports innovative programs and designates a portion of the
budget each year to provide students with engaging opportunities and experiences�

District Event / Competitions
The annual GPISD Geography and Social Studies
Bees are held in November each year during which
time each school sends student representatives to
compete both individually and as a campus team;
roughly seventy-five students compete annually� The
competition is designed to test students’ knowledge
of geography and social studies themes through an
individually assessed written exam and a quiz bowl
style team competition� The top performing team and
individual students are then entered to compete in the
Texas Citizen Bee at the regional level�

The district-wide Elementary Geography Bee enhances students’ education by encouraging
curiosity about the world and promoting development of critical thinking, research, and
map skills� This event challenges students to think analytically and recall detailed information
under pressure� Presenting their knowledge in front of peers, teachers, and district leadership
fosters a sense of accomplishment and pride�

The annual Spelling Bee, Secondary
Spanish Spelling Bee, and
French Spelling Bee strengthens
students’ academic foundation by
promoting excellence in spelling
accuracy� This event also fosters
a healthy sense of competition
and personal achievement, as
students proudly represent their
schools and showcase their hard
work� The consistent support of the
GPISD Board of Trustees highlights
the value placed on academic
rigor and student achievement,
and inspires all
learners to strive BUILDING ON A
LEGACY
for excellence�
